Kindergarten — Junior Explorers (Ages 3–6)

At American World School, our youngest learners — our Junior Explorers — begin their most important journey the moment they step through our doors. Through purposeful play, hands-on discovery, and warm, structured guidance, Kindergarten students naturally build the skills that matter most.

We believe the earliest years of a child's education are not just preparation for what comes next — they are an education in themselves. Every question a child asks, every problem they try to solve, every friendship they build, is laying the foundation for a future entrepreneur, leader, and changemaker.

The AWS Approach

Purposeful learning designed around the child

Personalized Progression

Every Junior Explorer advances through learning milestones at their own natural pace through small group exploration and hands-on projects.

Entrepreneurial Thinking

Even at age 5, students begin developing an entrepreneurial mindset, learning to identify problems and brainstorm creative solutions.

Multiple Paths to Understanding

Students demonstrate learning in ways that match who they are — through drawing, storytelling, movement, or conversation.

Mixed-Age Community

Junior Explorers learn alongside older students, building social-emotional skills through natural mentorship rooted in Finnish education.

Junior Explorer Curriculum

A rich, integrated learning experience

Science

Junior Explorers investigate life science, earth science, and engineering through hands-on experiments and small-group inquiry. Students explore the world directly.

Mathematics

We make mathematics real, relevant, and joyful through differentiated learning groups, hands-on materials, outdoor activities, and real-world connections.

Language Arts

Students develop literacy skills through guided reading, phonics, spelling, sight word fluency, writing, and the joy of storytelling with our Reading Buddies programme.

Visual Arts

Our art curriculum nurtures each child's creative voice while building foundational artistic skills: cutting, painting, modelling, drawing, and mixed media.

Physical Education

Junior Explorers grow their motor skills, coordination, and teamwork through active, fun PE sessions including football, basketball, and dance.

Entrepreneurship

Even at age 5, students discover that their ideas have value through simple activities like designing classroom solutions and organising mini sharing fairs.

Computer Science

Beginning in Grade 1, students explore computer systems, early programming concepts, and digital citizenship in age-appropriate ways.

Social-Emotional Learning

Woven throughout the entire school day through morning circle time, collaborative activities, role play, and guided reflection.

Junior Explorer FAQs

Common questions about our early childhood programme

Progress is measured through observation, documentation, and celebration of how your child applies their learning in real situations. We share detailed, narrative progress updates that give you a genuine, nuanced picture of your child's growth.
Student agency means giving your child an active role in their own learning — making meaningful choices, setting goals, and taking ownership. This develops crucial life skills: decision-making, self-awareness, and intrinsic motivation.
It's about mindset, not business plans. Junior Explorers learn to notice problems, ask creative questions, work with others, and try things even when uncertain. They might design a system for organising the classroom library or plan a simple sharing fair.
Children must be 5 years old by September 1st of the year they enrol. For the Early Years programme (Pre-KG), children must be 4 years old by September 1st. Please contact our admissions team for current availability.
Our small class sizes (12:1 ratio) and personalized approach mean teachers know each child deeply. Students needing additional support receive targeted attention, while those ready to move ahead are given enrichment opportunities. No child is held back, and no child is left behind.
