All People Belong at AWS

Building Community By Understanding Every Individual's Unique Value

Home About Us Equity & Belonging
Every Voice Matters. Every Story Strengthens Us. Every Person Belongs.

When children are seen, understood, and genuinely valued for who they are, something profound happens. They develop a deep sense of pride in themselves and appreciation for others. They learn to move through the world with open minds, respectful hearts, and the courage to stand up for what is right.

At American World School, we believe that diversity is not something we tolerate — it is something we celebrate. Equity is not a policy we adopt — it is a commitment we live. Inclusion is not a box we check — it is a culture we build every single day.

Our community includes students, families, and educators from 20+ countries, representing a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, beliefs, identities, and experiences. This diversity is one of our greatest strengths — and one of our most important responsibilities.

When every student feels they truly belong, academic growth flourishes. Creativity thrives. Entrepreneurial thinking expands. Students develop the empathy, perspective-taking, and global awareness that our interconnected world demands.

This is not work we do on the margins. It is central to who we are.

Our Approach to DEIJ

Our Commitment: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice

At AWS, our DEIJ work is spearheaded by our dedicated Director of Belonging and Social Impact, working in close collaboration with our school-wide DEIJ Committee — a group of students, parents, faculty, and administrators committed to making AWS a place where every person feels genuinely seen, heard, and valued.

Diversity

We celebrate and honor the full range of human identities, cultures, perspectives, and experiences within our community.

Equity

We ensure that every student has access to the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive — recognizing that fairness does not always mean sameness.

Inclusion

We actively create spaces where every person feels welcomed, respected, and empowered to participate fully in our community.

Justice

We educate ourselves and our students to recognize and challenge bias, prejudice, and systemic inequity — and to take action when we encounter it.

The AWS Community Commitment

We Stand Together: The AWS Community Commitment to DEIJ

As a community of students, parents and guardians, families, faculty, administration, staff, board members, and alumni, we commit ourselves to fostering a culture of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion that embodies anti-bias action and accountability.

We commit to living the AWS values — honesty, kindness, respect, courage, and responsibility — and doing the work necessary to maintain an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming environment for all.

We will continue to question and challenge our own biases and privileges, and use our experiences to empower and uplift our community.

Our Commitments By Role

As Educators, We Will...

  • Build our capacity to be effective anti-bias educators. We engage in ongoing professional development, self-reflection, and learning to ensure we are equipped to teach in ways that honour every student's identity and experience.
  • Work with the community to construct a positive sense of self and develop character strengths. We help students develop pride in who they are, confidence in their unique value, and the character to act with integrity and kindness.
  • Embrace diversity and recognise and question injustice. We integrate diverse perspectives into our teaching, acknowledge historical and current injustices, and create space for students to explore difficult questions with honesty and respect.
  • Feel empowered to act against racism, prejudice, and discrimination. We do not remain silent in the face of bias. We intervene with care when we witness exclusion or harm, and we model what it means to be an active upstander.
  • Embrace a broad range of perspectives in our teaching. We ensure that the curriculum, the stories we tell, the examples we use, and the voices we elevate reflect the full diversity of human experience — not a narrow, dominant perspective.

As Students, We Will...

  • Do our part to foster a more inclusive, caring, and supportive community. We treat every person with kindness and respect. We welcome new students, reach across differences, and make AWS a place where everyone feels they belong.
  • Empower ourselves and peers to speak out against acts of injustice and exclusionary behaviours and speech. We do not laugh at hurtful jokes. We do not stay silent when someone is excluded or treated unfairly. We use our voices — and we support others who use theirs.
  • Challenge ourselves and our peers to live the AWS values. We hold ourselves accountable to the standards we have committed to. We acknowledge when we fall short, learn from our mistakes, and keep growing.
  • Commit to supporting our peers in the full diversity of their identities and experiences. We celebrate differences rather than fearing them. We listen to understand, not to judge. We recognise that every person's story matters.

As Parents and Guardians, We Will...

  • Commit to celebrating the unique identities of our children. We affirm who our children are — in all their complexity, individuality, and potential. We create homes where identity is celebrated, not hidden.
  • Recognise that our children are part of a world of diverse perspectives and experiences. We prepare our children to live, work, and lead in a global, multicultural world by ensuring they develop empathy, cultural humility, and respect for difference.
  • Model an attitude of openness, respect, and inclusion towards all members of the school community. Our children watch how we speak about others, how we respond to difference, and how we treat people. We model the values we want them to embody.
  • Support AWS educators and fellow families to help prepare and develop our children's capacity to participate in an increasingly diverse world. We partner with the school in this essential work. We engage in conversations at home. We seek to understand rather than judge. We show up with openness and humility.

As Administrators, We Will...

  • Lead by example to create a more diverse, inclusive, open, and supportive community. Leadership begins with us. We model the attitudes, behaviours, and commitments we ask of others. We make DEIJ central to every decision, every policy, and every practice.
  • Acknowledge that a truly inclusive community is one in which there is diversity and representation in all positions of leadership. We actively work to ensure that leadership — at every level — reflects the diversity of our community. Representation matters. We act on that belief.
  • Model ethical and equitable actions in our interactions with others and our decision-making. We lead with integrity, transparency, and accountability. We acknowledge when we make mistakes, and we act swiftly to make things right.
  • Educate and empower our community to speak out against acts of injustice or exclusionary behaviours and speech. We create structures, systems, and a culture in which every person feels safe and supported to speak up when something is wrong. We listen. We act.

Student Agency & Belonging

Where Students Are Seen, Heard, and Valued

At AWS, we don't just talk about the student voice — we build it into the fabric of our school. Our commitment to learner autonomy and strong student agency ensures that every student's voice is genuinely heard, not just invited. Students at AWS do not simply attend school. They shape it.

Through Student Government, student-led clubs, community councils, entrepreneurship projects, and daily classroom experiences, AWS students learn that their perspectives matter, their ideas have power, and their presence makes a difference.

This is what belonging looks like in practice:

When students feel they belong, they take risks. They ask questions. They contribute. They lead. They become the confident, empathetic, entrepreneurial young people we are committed to developing.

The Power of Diverse Stories

Embracing Multiple Perspectives, Challenging Our Own Biases

At AWS, we boldly redefine excellence by embracing multiple perspectives, challenging our own biases and privileges, and deepening our understanding of the impact we have on each other as global citizens.

We do not shy away from difficult conversations. We do not pretend that bias does not exist. We do not assume that good intentions are enough.

Instead, we:

We Learn Together

Building Our DEIJ Mindset and Skills — As a Community

Voices from Our Community

What our students and parents say about belonging at AWS

At my old school, I felt like I had to hide parts of who I was to fit in. At AWS, I don't. I can be myself — all of myself — and people actually celebrate that.
— Grade 10 Student
We don't just learn about diversity in a textbook. We live it every day. My best friends are from different countries, and that's just normal here. I think that's made me a better person.
— Grade 8 Student
When something happens in the world — like a natural disaster or an injustice — we talk about it at AWS. We don't pretend it didn't happen. That's made me feel like my questions and my feelings actually matter.
— Grade 6 Student
As a family that relocated to Chennai from Singapore, we were concerned about finding a school that truly values diversity. AWS exceeded our expectations. Our children are surrounded by peers from every corner of the world, and the respect for different cultures is genuine — not performative.
— Parent of Grade 3 & Grade 7 Students
The DEIJ workshops for parents have been eye-opening. I've learned how to talk to my children about privilege, identity, and fairness in ways I never knew how to before. AWS doesn't just educate children — they support families in this work too.
— Parent of Grade 5 Student
My daughter came home one day and told me about a conversation her class had about gender stereotypes. She said her teacher made space for everyone to share their thoughts, even when they disagreed. That kind of environment — where students can think critically and respectfully — is exactly what we hoped for.
— Parent of Grade 9 Student

Ongoing Commitment

This Work Is Never "Done"

DEIJ work is not a destination. It is a continuous journey.

We do not claim to be perfect. We acknowledge that we make mistakes, that we have more to learn, and that creating a truly inclusive community requires ongoing effort, humility, and accountability.

But we are committed — genuinely, deeply committed — to doing this work.
